JEWEL
From Homer, Alaska. Jewel Kilcher started as a child yodeler in her parents' stage show. In her late teens she moved with her mother to San Diego where they lived in separate VW vans instead of apartments. Jewel pursued her music career and was discovered after building a strong coffee shop following. Actor Sean Penn was an early supporter. Building a strong fan base for her acoustic guitar stylings, she became the first prominent "folk" style singer to appear on the alternative scene since Tracy Chapman. Before becoming popular, Jewel made a contribution to the soundtrack for the film "The Craft" that was modern, danceable, and unlike anything that she was becoming known for. After the interest in female singer/songwriters began to diminish at the turn of the century, Jewel returned to dance and pop sounds for her album "0304", after a successful remix of "Serve The Ego" from her previous album topped the dance charts. Jewel has also caused some ripples in the press, first for an appearance at the Academy Awards where she wore a chiffon dress that became transparent under bright lights, and for a romance with rodeo star Ty Murray. 1995-present.
