INXS
From Australia. Pronounced in-excess. Led by brothers Tim Farriss (guitar) and Jon Farriss (drums) with Michael Hutchence (vocals), Garry Gary Beers (guitar), Andrew Farriss (keyboards) and Kirk Pengilly (guitar). Their music produced a distinct guitar dance groove, solidified by their fifth album "Listen Like Thieves". One of the more popular alternative groups of the 80's and early 90's, the suicide death of singer Michael Hutchence on November 22, 1997 took the band by surprise. At 37 years of age, Hutchence was found dead, naked and hung to a door with his own belt in the Sydney hotel room he was staying in. No suicide note or hint of foul play was found but it was said that he was depressed and despondent over events unfolding in his personal life and may have been mixing alcohol with the anti-depressant prozac. The band continued touring with the vocal assistance of Jon Stevens (ex-Noiseworks) and in 2003 released new music over the internet. In 2004, the band decided the best way to find the best singer in the world to replace Hutchence would be to launch a reality tv show where the winner of a contest would become the new lead singer for the group. The show entitled "Rock Star: INXS" aired on television in 2005 and the winning contestant and new lead singer of INXS is Canadian singer Jason Dean "J.D." Fortune. Jon Stevens has advised Fortune to get a good lawyer, because he feels ripped off by the band after fronting them for three years of touring. Fortune might be feeling the same way now, as of 2008, he has been fired from the band for excessive drug use. 1980-97/2003-06.
