JOOLS HOLLAND

From London, England.  As an on again-off again member of Squeeze, Julian "Jools" Holland gave the group a great keyboard sound and a sense of personality.  On his own, his cigar chomping, wise cracking character has been the host of many UK television programs.  As a solo act, one great album with his group The Millionaires brought about the hit "Bumble Boogie" in 1981 and a solo musical career that explored a place for ragtime, jazz, boogie and other styles of the past that are missing from today's popular music culture.  Most people recognize him as the host of "Later" a show so popular it was spun off to the United States, and he hosted the first season stateside, however as with most corporate run errors, the US version first lost Jools, then lost the music, then became a vehicle for a revolving door of semi-personality hosts from the US.  Holland has the lucrative ability of knowing so many famous musicians via his show, he is somewhat like Paul Schaeffer of David Letterman's house band, frequently called upon as a sideman, he gets the favor returned when he puts out his own star studded albums.  One coup was the last recording of George Harrison on their collaboration "Horse To Water".  Squeeze's Difford & Tilbrook were always referred to as the new Lennon & McCartney, it now seems that Jools equates with George, everything old is new again.  In 2003, Holland was awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth II, the same award given to The Beatles in the early 1960's.  1978-present.
