RICHARD HELL & THE VOIDOIDS

photo: Kate Simon
From New York City. Born Lester Meyers in Lexington, Kentucky, Hell was an original member of Television and The Heartbreakers before going solo. A colorful character on stage, his idea of punk clothing was borrowed by Malcom McLaren for The Sex Pistols. Sometimes acting or writing books, Hell was also formerly married to singer Patty Smyth of Scandal. The Voidoids were: Richard Hell (vocals/bass), Robert Quine (guitar), Ivan Julian (guitar) and Marc Bell (drums). Bell later became "Marky Ramone". It was over twenty years before Hell reassembled his group The Voidoids for a new internet single in 2000. On May 31, 2004, Quine was found dead in New York City, an apparent suicide and yet another punk rock casualty. 1976-present.
