OFRA HAZA
From Tel Aviv, Israel. Haza
borrowed from traditional ancient Hebrew folk songs and mixed the chants
up with dance beats and rhythms to form a new style of worldbeat dance music.
She first came to prominence in the US after being sampled by rappers Erik
B. & Rakim in the song "Paid In Full" and then by M/A/R/R/S in their
hit "Pump Up The Volume". Performing since age 13, she had released dozens
of albums in her native land. It is also Haza's soaring vocals that you
can hear backing up Andrew Eldritch on The Sisters Of Mercy song "Temple
Of Love". Israel's first internationally known pop star died of AIDS on
February 23, 2000. She was 41 years old. Her public was largely shocked
in the aftermath. Haza had not contracted the disease sexually but through
a blood transfusion. She was more concerned about maintaining her image
in the culturally diverse part of the world in which she lived, than to reveal her condition to the public. A little
over a year later her husband died of a drug overdose and an inquest was
made by her family to determine if he was the source of her illness. 1979-1999.
