SOPHIE B. HAWKINS
From New York City. Considering herself to be an "omnisexual", her sexual freedom shows strongly in her videos and live shows. Sophie Ballantine Hawkins left home at age 14 to live with her African drummer boyfriend who was in his 40's at the time. She is known for her eccentricity and daring as illustrated by a nude photo shoot in Interview magazine. Her most recent album "Timbre" was not released for a time due to a dispute between the artist and the label. She vocally went on a campaign on both radio and television to get it released as recorded and it was, however this painted her as difficult and got her dropped from her label. Apparently the label did not want her to use a banjo on the first single. She then fought for and regained the rights to her third album and rereleased it in an expanded edition on her own label. Sophie has the interesting distinction of having the longest charting song on the history of Billboard magazine's charts, "As I Lay Me Down" at 67 weeks. Taking up a more traditional lifestyle, Hawkins gave birth to a baby boy named Dashiell in November of 2008. 1992-present.
