HERBIE HANCOCK

From Chicago, Illinois.  A jazz musician of long standing, Herbie's place in alternative music is two fold.  Looking to expand his horizons in the 80's after several decades as a jazz pianist, Herbie turned to the synthesizer keyboard and concocted the first hit that combined record scratching with popular music, the innovative "Rockit".  An equally impressive video directed by Godley & Creme followed but Hancock's momentum stopped there.  Two more albums of electronic music followed.  Then in the 90's, Herbie's 1963 jazz track "Cantaloupe Island" was sampled for use in the US3 hit, "Cantaloop" and Herbie hit the alternative charts again, the only jazz musician to make the alternative rock charts twice.  Born in 1940 and a child prodigy, Hancock began his recording career in 1963 and scored his first top ten hit that same year.  In the 70's, Hancock developed a progressive style of jazz that would widely become known as "fusion".  Herbie is most recently seen in this decade as a salesperson for the Bose electronics home stereo system.  In 2005, Hancock took another stab at mixing his jazz style with modern pop by releasing an album with collaborators featuring: Sting, Annie Lennox, Trey Anastasio and others.  1983.
