GREEN DAY
From San Francisco, California. Led by Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals/guitar) with Mike Dirnt (bass) and Tre Cool (Frank Edwin Wright III) (drums). The band's name comes from a song that Billie Joe wrote after his first pot smoking experience. The band's original name was Sweet Children and they released one EP under that name. Their hit "Basket Case" was inspired by actress Ally Sheedy's character in the 80's cult film "The Breakfast Club". In the 1990's, Green Day was the one band responsible for the major resurgence of punk flavored pop music. By 2000, the radio lost its romance with the band but a sly release under the name The Network brought about some interest again. They didn't lose the momentum. Quickly following this coup, they aligned themselves with legal downloading of music by providing a cover of "I Fought The Law" for a tv ad campaign and then Armstrong revealed his masterpiece, "American Idiot", the first punk rock opera which became a success that reignited their career as true punk rock innovators. At a loss for a quick follow-up to their masterpiece, the band came back anonymously again, this time calling themselves the Foxboro Hot Tubs with a 2008 release. 2009 saw the release of a three part monsterwork caled "21st Century Breakdown" and 2010 debuted a Broadway version of "American Idiot". 1987-present
