EDDY GRANT
From Guyana, now living on Barbados. The former leader of The Equals. The Equals had one major hit in 1968, "Baby Come Back" and scored three other chart toppers as well. At age 21, Eddy suffered a heart attack and quit the band, beginning a solo career that didn't tax him as much. His biggest hit came in 1983 with "Electric Avenue". Grant's influence is far reaching, even The Clash covered The Equals song "Police On My Back". Grant also tried but failed to win control of the estate of Bob Marley. One of the first creators of the music style known as Soca, a long time dispute exists with him and Lord Shorty over who created the style. In the 90's Grant developed a new style called Ringbang which he had the good sense to copyright much to many an island musician's dismay. 2001 saw his Ringbang remix of "Electric Avenue" soar to number five in the British charts. 1968-present.
