THE GO-GO'S
From Los Angeles. Led by Belinda Carlisle (vocals) and Jane Wiedlin (vocals/guitar) with Charlotte Caffey (guitar), Kathy Valentine (bass) and Gina Schock (drums). What The Runaways could never achieve, The Go-Go's achieved in a blink. The first truly successful all-girl band of the new wave era. Belinda was the original drummer for The Germs, and had her roots in the L.A. punk scene when she joined up with other members including original bassist Margot Olliveria who later ended up in Brian Brain. Valentine came in from The Textones and replaced Olliveria bringing with her a song from her Textones repertoire called "Vacation" in a very different form than the hit it would later become. When "We Got The Beat" became a hit in England on the Stiff label, they had the smarts to drop their ugly punk image and pick-up a new wave look. The rest is history. After Wiedlin left the group, the band split shortly after but have had three reformations during the 90's with a 1999 tour. All the members went on to some success, Carlisle and Wiedlin with solo careers, Schock had her own band House Of Schock before re-teaming with Valentine as part of The Delphines. Caffey married Jeff MacDonald of Redd Kross and has concentrated mostly on songwriting, also taking the time to be a member of The Graces which featured Meredith Brooks. 1981-84/1990/1994/1999-present.
