GARY GLITTER
From Oxfordshire, England. One of the campier heroes of the glam movement. Known in the U.S. for his hit "Rock And Roll Pt. 2" which consists of the sole lyric "hey!". Born Paul Gadd, he recorded under the names Paul Russel, Paul Raven, Paul Monday, Rubber Bucket and finally Gary Glitter. He is also featured on the original cast recording of "Jesus Christ Superstar". His impact on the glam movement was nominal but he opened the door for the outrageous wardrobe and attitude of the new wave that followed. His obvious influence on Joan Jett and Suzi Quatro shaped future hits for those stars. Glitter was arrested in 1997 and charged with owning child pornography when he took his computer in for repair and the technicians found the files on his hard drive! His sentence came in 1999: four months imprisonment. Afterwards he left the country, turning up in Cuba and then Cambodia and finally in Vietnam where in 2005 he was again arrested on sexual charges involving some local minor girls. If the charges stick, he might be facing the death penalty there. A clear and tragic case of rock and roll excess taken to extremes. 1960-present.
