From Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Led by Neil Osbourne (vocals/guitar) with Brad Merritt (bass), Matt Johnson (drums) and Phil Comparelli (guitar). They derive their name from the campaign slogan "54-40 Or Fight" used by President James K. Polk in regards to manifest destiny and Canada's claims to land below the 54th parallel of latitude. One of their songs ("I Go Blind") became a substantial hit for Hootie & The Blowfish. Together now for over 20 years, they are one of Canada's best known alternative rock acts. 1981-present.
