EVANESCENCE

 

 

From Little Rock, Arkansas.  Led by Amy Lee (vocals) with Ben Moody (guitar), Will Boyd (bass), John LeCompt (guitar) and Rocky Gray (drums).  In today's hard rock version of alternative radio, the main problem is that everything sounds the same, same guitar sound, same screamed lyrics.  Breaking that cycle is Evanescence, with actual singing over the raw guitar, by female vocalist Amy Lee.  About six months into their quick rise in visibility, their record company decided to yank all their cds from every Christian record store in the country to distance the band from being a "Christian" act.  Regardless of publicity stunts or religious beliefs, there is real talent here that stands out above their peers in both Christian and alternative radio.  Founding guitarist and song writer Ben Moody left the band unexpectedly during a tour in 2003 and became a prominent behind the scenes songwriter for quite a few major female pop stars.  His replacement is former Cold guitarist Terry Balsamo.  Soon after, Lee fired bassist Will Boyd and replaced him with Tim McCord. Evanescence is defined as a disappearing or dissipating vapor.  And so it seems that the band stands by its name as members come and go and Lee being the only consistent member.  In 2007, LeCompt and Gray were fired by Lee after a four year run.  2000-present.
