EMINEM
From Detroit, Michigan. Eminem was born Marshall Mathers. The influx of white rap and metal into the alternative music of the late 90's is epitomized in the success of Eminem, Kid Rock and the like. Even though his style is derivative of standard gangster rap, Eminem has the musical smarts to find a hook and rap his tongue around it like no other rapper. His popularity has grown with every misstep, cultivating his mostly pubescent audience with every new verbal outrage. A stab at acting in a film loosely based on his life ("8 Mile") was actually successful which puts him a step above Vanilla Ice as an actor and somewhere below Ice Cube as an entertainer. Probably the most astounding moment of his career came when he won the Academy Award for "Lose Yourself" in 2003. Did he deserve it? That's really impossible to say, but you could tell the audience was just as mystified and Eminem obviously didn't believe he would win either, since he was not there to accept the award. Eminem is talented, there is no doubt about that. Music however is an ever changing entity and Mr. Mathers needs to prove that he can roll with the changes as the new century moves past rap, and into the next innovation. He has implied that he has come to the end of his game by suggesting retirement and in early 2006, he re-wed Kim Mathers, his former wife who was indeed the source of most of his agitated lyrics. The reunion didn't last long and Eminem disappeared into the cultural background for several years. 2009 saw him reemerge with a new album and picking the same old pop fights. 1996-present.
