DR. FEELGOOD
From Canvey Island, England. Led by Lee Billeaux (vocals/harmonica) with Wilko Johnson (guitar), John Martin (bass) and John Sparks (drums). One of the first pub rock bands to establish the scene that would later break through to new wave and punk. Starting as a blues band, they embraced the energy of old R&B and combined them to form high energy pub rock, a new departure from the heavy electric blues of 70's England. Their name is actually not an homage to early 60's bluesman Dr. Feelgood, but taken from one of their own early songs. Johnson, one of the group's main attractions, split from the band after the fourth album. Brilleaux was one of the first and primary investors in a new record label called Stiff which would change the face of British rock in the late 70's and early 80's. Brilleaux was the only constant of the band as members came and went, he lost a battle with cancer in 1994 and died at age 41. While the band has continued on without him, we've chosen not to list post-Brilleaux albums in our discography since it is now little more than a tribute to its former self and all original members are gone from the line-up. 1973-94.
