THE DICTATORS

From New York City. Led by Andy Shernoff (vocals/bass) and "Handsome Dick" Manitoba (Richard Blum) (vocals) with Scott "Top Ten" Kempner (guitar), Ross "The Boss" Funichello (guitar) and "Stu-Boy" King (drums). Manitoba was originally the band's roadie but his imposing presence brought him quickly into the spotlight. A well known incident occurred when a fight broke out between Manitoba and Wayne County, where County smashed Manitoba with a microphone stand. This incident got them banned from several important clubs which in turn hindered their career. Pre-dating many other bands on the early New York punk scene, their garage rock was a harbinger of the coming punk movement. After the band broke-up, Kempner formed The Del-Lords. Shernoff, Funichello and Manitoba regrouped under the name Manitoba's Wild Kingdom. The band reformed in the late 90's, released a good old fashioned seven inch in 1996 and by 2001 had a whole new cd to offer the world. 1975-81/1996-present.
