DESMOND DEKKER
From Kingston, Jamaica. Best known for helping to start the career of Bob Marley, Dekker (Desmond Dacre) has cemented himself as one of the true kings of ska and rock steady. His first major worldwide hit was "The Israelites" in 1969. Regaining some prominence in the 80's when the second wave of ska hit pop culture, he signed to the popular Stiff label and moved to England. In the 90's, Dekker returned again with the new interest in third wave ska by combining with second wave ska band The Specials for an album. Continuing to tour into 2006, Dekker unexpectedly died in May of that year, only a few days after a recent university performance. 1963-1999.
