THE CARS
THE NEW CARS
From
Boston, Massachusetts. Led by the double haunting voices of Ric Ocasek
(Richard Otcasek)(vocals/guitar) and Benjamin Orr (Benjamin Orzechowski)
(vocals/bass) with Elliot Easton (guitar), Greg Hawkes (keyboards) and Dave
Robinson (drums). The trio of Orr, Hawkes and Ocasek had already released
a folkish rock album under the name of Milkwood in 1973 when they decided
to change musical directions. Adding on Robinson from The Modern Lovers
helped to seal a new image. One of the biggest bands of the new wave, they
are rarely heard on any alternative stations these days, mysteriously clumped
in with classic rockers on the radio. After the band split, Orr and Ocasek
found solo careers while Easton also released a solo album and joined both
The Reckless Sleepers and then Creedence Clearwater Revisited, an unlikely
choice for his talents. Orr went on to lead a band of the same name in the
Boston area but died unexpectedly of cancer in October 2000. Hawkes released
solo recordings while the group was together but hasn't released anything
since. Ocasek enjoyed the most popularity of all the members but hasn't
been embraced by today's alternative audience. He married supermodel Paulina
Porizkova and has several children. One child from a previous marriage,
Christopher Otcasek has attempted a solo career and scored a minor rock hit
in his own band, Glamour Camp. In 2005, an underground buzz suggested that
the group would reform, but Ocasek was not interested. Undaunted, Elliot
Easton and Greg Hawkes formed The New Cars for a 2006 summer tour along with
Kasim Sulton of Utopia handling the bass, Prairie Prince of The Tubes on
drums and a surprising new choice for lead vocalist, Todd Rundgren! Doing
an earnest if tongue-in-cheek impression of Ocasek and Orr, Rundgren said
he was in it for the money and the fun, and an internet single was released
before the tour began that has all the classic sounds of a late 80's Cars
song. The group actually reformed in earnest in 2010 and released an album
in 2011, their first new studio album in 24 years!
