THE CURE
From Crawley, England. Led by Robert Smith (vocals/guitar) with Simon Gallup (bass) and Lol Tolhurst (drums). The band has walked a fine line from their punk/synth beginnings to psychedelic modern rock. The band originally was not able to secure a recording contract, their sound was a little ahead of its time. Eventually they developed a loyal audience and are now considered to be one of the legendary alternative bands of the 80's era. Smith's voice and guitar have always been a constant while other members come and go. Tolhurst was fired from the band in 1988. Smith also did double time lending his guitar to Siouxsie & The Banshees for a while in the early 80's. The band began in 1976 as Malice, then Easy Cure and finally The Cure. Former bass guitarist Phil Thornalley also played with Johnny Hates Jazz and produced Natalie Imbruglia's hit "Torn". Former drummer Boris Williams left the band to join up with former Shellyan Orphan members in Babacar. The current line-up: Smith (vocals/guitar), Gallup (bass), Roger O'Donnell (keyboards), Perry Bamonte (guitar) and Jason Cooper (drums). 1978-present.
