KID CREOLE & THE COCONUTS
From, The Bronx, New York. Led by Kid Creole (August Darnell) (vocals/bass) wih Coati Mundi ("Sugar Coated" Andy Hernandez) (percussion/vibraphone/vocals), assorted pick-up musicians and an ever changing trio of back-up female vocalists called The Coconuts. Darnell and Hernandez started out in the 70's disco act, Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band. The band was led by two brothers of Haitian ancestry, Stony Browder Jr. and his brother Thomas. Thomas would later begin to use his two middle names, August and Darnell. They produced a monster disco hit with "Cherchez La Femme" which featured the vocals of Cory Daye. The latin feel that permeated that hit carried into The Coconuts sound. Darnell moved the sound towards world beat and pop, successfully mixing in rhumba/salsa/tango/lambada and other dance influences into its modern alternative dance mix.
