From Rochdale, England and raised in Zinbabwe and South Africa. First with Juluka and then his band Savuka, Johnny Clegg has been the "great white hope" when it comes to music from South Africa. He embodies the defiance of the individual during the years before the end of apartheid, by defying the government laws, time and time again by simply performing with his mixed race group. Incorporating native rhythms (mbaqanga) and Zulu chants with rock and roll, he has formed a unique place for himself in the land of alternative rock. Clegg has since reformed Juluka and is now a solo act. 1972-93.
