THE CLASH

From London.  Led by Joe Strummer (vocals/guitar) and Mick Jones (vocals/guitar) with Paul Simonon (bass), Nicky "Topper" Headon (drums) and sometimes Terry Chimes (aka Tory Crimes)(drums).  Formed from ex-members of The 101'ers and The London SS, they originally called themselves The Teardrops. Introducing dub and reggae to punk led to brilliant experimentation that set them apart from the anger of the Sex Pistols.  Political rock took on a new meaning when examined by The Clash.  By their "Sandinista" album, differences in opinion on the band's sound resulted in the firing of group founder Mick Jones.  Jones immediately formed Big Audio Dynamite. Headon left the band as well at that point, suffering from a strong heroin addiction.  Strummer and Simonon continued on for one more album adding Vince White (guitar), Nick Sheppard (guitar) and bringing back original drummer Chimes.  In 1994, all original members participated in rehearsals for a possible reunion but postponed the idea after The Sex Pistols reformed. Public expectations were aroused when Strummer stated he was looking forward to playing together again with the band at their Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction in 2003 but sadly that was never to be.  Joe Strummer passed away from heart failure at age 50 in December 2002.  Keith Levene, who would later form P.I.L. with Johnny Rotten was also an original member of The Clash in their prerecording days.  1977-85.
