From Rockford, Illinois. Led by Robin Zander (vocals) with Rick Nielsen (guitar), Tom Petersson (bass) and Bun E. Carlos (drums). The question arises, does this band belong in a book about modern rock? The answer would have to be yes. Their unique form of pop rock didn't fit in with the hard rock or hair metal scene of the times. Petersson left the band for six years between 1981-86 while the band took a brief detour into power ballads (ooops!) A jumbled period followed with poorly conceived albums but the band would score a number one single ("The Flame"). The late 1990's saw them come back to form, even releasing a single on the highly regarded indy Sub Pop label. Great American bands citing Cheap Trick as a major influence include The Replacements and Smashing Pumpkins! Interestingly as some bands become less and less relevant with the passage of time, Cheap Trick remains vital and groundbreaking. Zander released a solo album in 1993. Petersson released some solo work in 1984. Bun E. Carlos released an all drumming sample disc and in 2009 joined with other rock stars to form the group Tinted Windows. Nielsen, Carlos and Petersson were also in a band together called Fuse which released one album back in 1969! They eventually changed their name to Sick Man Of Europe before forming Cheap Trick. 1977-present.
