BABES IN TOYLAND
From Minneapolis, Minnesota. Led by Kathy "Kat" Bjelland (pronounced Bee-yay-land) with Danna Cochran (bass)and Lori Barbero (drums). One of the original all girl grunge bands. Original bassist Michelle Leon left the group after her boyfriend (Joe Cole) was killed while defending himself during an attempted burglary where he shared a house with Black Flag singer Henry Rollins. Fate also befell their second bassist Maureen Herman when she left the group suddenly after becoming disabled by a genetic hip disorder. Leon rejoined the band briefly to help the other members fulfill some tour dates but the reunion was not a permanent one. This resulted in a group split in 1996 but subsequent reunion tours resulted in renewed faith in the band. Bjelland and Barbero now have former Fuzzbox player Maggie Dunne on bass. Bjelland is also known to have an on again/off again friendship with former bandmate Courtney Love. Bjelland supposedly accused Love of stealing her look (trampy make-up and babydoll nightgowns) before tossing her out of an early version of Babes. Further arguments resulted supposedly in the song "Violet" by Hole and "Bruise Violet" by the Babes. Bjelland also performs with her side band Katastrophy Wife and has released an album with them as well. 1989-present.
