THE BLASTERS
From Los Angeles. Led by the Alvin brothers, Phil Alvin (vocals/guitar) and Dave Alvin (guitar) with Bill Bateman (drums), John Bazz (bass), Lee Allen (saxophone), Steve Berlin (saxophone) and Gene Taylor (keyboards). The Blasters are a roots revival act with a pure rockabilly edge. As teenagers, the Alvins stumbled into a friendship with blues legend Big Joe Turner ("Shake, Rattle & Roll"). He became a mentor to them and through him they developed a relationship with sax great Lee Allen who played on most of Little Richard and Fats Domino's classic hits. Allen later joined the band! In 1985, after much infighting between the brothers, Dave Alvin and Gene Taylor quit, effectively halting The Blasters. Berlin left the group to join Los Lobos, Allen died of a heart attack, Dave joined X then went on to a popular solo career. Phil Alvin still releases new work both with and without The Blasters, taking time off in the early 90's to create a mathematical thesis which earned him a doctorate degree! The Blasters have quietly continued as a live band and were all set to release a "comeback" live album in 1996 that might have reintroduced the world to the band but a change in guitarists prevented its release. A live album was eventually released by the band and their first studio album in 19 years was released in 2004! 1980-85/1997-present.
