BLACK UHURU
From Waterhouse, Jamaica. Led by Duckie "Gong" Simpson (guitar) with Andrew Bees (vocals) and Tracy Anderson (vocals). Formed in 1974, they are the leading second generation reggae group of Jamaica. Many changes over the years but still going strong. Simpson is the only original member. Vocalists over the years have included Michael Rose, Junior Reid, Garth Dennis, Don Carlos and Sandra "Puma" Jones. Jones, an American, sadly died of cancer in 1990. The first reggae group to ever win a Grammy award, they continue to experiment with the definition of reggae, even bringing in rapper Ice-T for some vocals on a 1992 release. Rose and Reid have gone on to vital solo careers while Dennis was once a member of Wailing Souls. 1977-present.
