ASH

From Downpatrick, Northern Ireland.  Led by Tim Wheeler (vocals/guitar) with Charlotte Hatherley (guitar), Mark Hamilton (bass) and Rick "Rock" McMurray (drums). A punk pop band that started under the name Vietnam in the late 80's (a heavy metal outfit).  They changed their musical slant and found inspiration in both the punk of yesterday and today, often being favorably compared with Green Day.   At the band's inception, they released many demo tapes and even made a compilation best of demo tape before releasing their first indy single "Jack Names The Planets".   Heatherley left the band in 2006 which resulted in a band rethink.  In 2007, Wheeler announced that "Twilight..." would be their last album.  In a way, he was not being untruthful, because in 2009, Ash began a project of releasing a vinyl single, every two weeks for a year, each given a different letter of the alphabet on their covers.  Wheeler feels that due to a lack of record label support and new technologies, the album format is dead and thus begins their new journey as a singles only band, hoping that music lovers will simply download each new opus!  As of March 2010, 13 singles have been released and the plan seems to be going well as 3 have charted in the UK dance charts, and 8 total have appeared on the UK Indy charts.  1995-present.
