ALICE IN CHAINS
From Seattle, Washington. Led by Layne Staley (vocals) with Jerry Cantrell (guitar), Mike Starr (bass) and Sean Kinney (drums). Metal grunge sounds from the great northwest. As an early leader in the grunge movement, the band's slow dirge style helped grunge cross into the standard world of rock radio. Mike Starr was replaced after the first album by heavy metal bassist Mike Inez who previously played with Ozzy Osbourne. Layne Staley had been known for his drug problems which always keep the band's future in question. Jerry Cantrell, the second and equal musical force behind the band began to issue solo albums in the interim, waiting to see if Staley would solve his problems. Year after year began to pass as a result of Staley's inability to deal with real life and rock star staus, which resulted in his eventual death by overdose at age 34, on April 5, 2002 , the same day several years earlier, that Kurt Cobain committed suicide. In 2006, the band reunited for a tour with new singer William DuVall, a member of Cantrell's solo band handling the vocal duties. This resulted in a studio album released in 2009 that definitely captures the sound and power of the original band. 1989-97/2009-present.
